– Trending for 2013 is Emerald! To give your room a refreshing new look, teem this beautiful and peaceful color with nature’s hues. . . seaside blues, springtime greens, soft cloud whites, or even shades of oranges. A monochromatic room would really POP with a splash of Emerald on a lamp shade, accent pillows, wall paint, upholstery fabrics, accent pieces, bedspread or a floral arrangement. Be bold and creative!!
– The role of lighting is key to the look and feel of a space. Customize a room bathed in your own personal style with the use of lighting – you may even want to decorate an interior space with a fabulous lighting fixture as the inspiration. Think about the effect of a stunning chandelier. They can be works of art, traditional with old world charm, or contemporary with bold colors, unique shapes and materials. Chandeliers can express your personality with exciting colors, ethnic styles, nature-inspired themes, plus natural, shiny or crystalline materials. In the kitchen, consider the “comeback trend” of track lighting as well as under and over cabinet lighting. Check out the latest in track lighting technology, which can be surprisingly very eco-friendly and efficient. Table lamp trends include natural materials, ethnic inspiration, classic European charm, designs enhanced with the warmth of wood, textures and patterns found in nature, or a luxurious influence of chrome and mirrors.
– When selecting carpet colors, going neutral is always a safe choice. Trending now are neutrals in soft grays and warm browns. To liven up your neutral carpeted floor palette, try adding pops of color in stylish area rugs and playful accent pieces. Selecting the correct carpet style is determined by each individual room – is it a high traffic area, bedroom, play room, hallway, stairs, bathroom, etc? Looped and cut pile carpets are very durable. Texture-style carpets work best in high traffic areas while the plush Saxony and cable-style carpets can add to the luxurious comfort desired in a master or guest bedroom that gets only low foot traffic.
–Your fine wood furniture will give you years of lasting pleasure if you keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heating and air conditioning vents. Moisture is your wood furniture’s worst enemy; Clean up spills as soon as possible and use coasters, placemats or tablecloths when dining. After routine dusting, try rearranging your accessories occasionally to prevent permanent marks. Polish your furniture only every 4-6 months.
Prevent soil from imbedding into the fibers with regular vacuuming and light brushing. It is always a good idea to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when spot cleaning your fabric or leather pieces. However, leather furniture maintains its natural beauty when kept out of direct sunlight and routinely cleaned with a soft absorbent cloth.
– Most of today’s wood floors have urethane finishes so they no longer require a wax to keep them beautiful. However, all wood floors can be damaged by water, sand, dirt and high heel shoes. Mats and throw rugs strategically placed inside and outside entrances, and in front of kitchen sinks will help to catch the unwanted dirt and moisture. Regular sweeping with a good quality broom and light vacuuming (no beater bar!) to get in between the boards will help to keep the floor’s luster with a minimum of scratches. Occasional damp mopping after removing surface dirt will maintain the shine that makes your wood floor glow.
